Thomas Stevens attended his first life drawing class while an undergraduate student at UNC Chapel Hill, and has continued to explore art throughout his life, with a continued interest in the human figure while also exploring landscapes, portraits, and other subjects.
He took numerous drawing classes and workshops in the 80’s and 90’s, then studied sculpture with Martine Vaugel when she had a studio in Durham. In 2010 Thomas studied oil painting under John Beerman, and has since focused on painting in oil. In 2015 he opened the Thomas Stevens Gallery in Hillsborough, NC.
Artist Statement
I like to think of myself as a bricoleur, tinkering with vivacity and whimsey, light and shadow, dancing with seriousness and play. My art is generally representational, however I pay close attention to abstract, symbolic, and allegorical elements.
My longstanding artistic interest is the human figure. While I seek to portray a particular individual, I strive to have each work convey universal interest and emotion. Likewise, my landscapes depict very specific locations, collectively comprising a body of work that shares the broad theme of viewing into the interior spaces of exterior places, where activity is in the shadows as much as the light.
Whether serious or playful, light or dark, figurative or otherwise, it’s all about making the art alive for the viewer as well as the artist. If the art feels alive, we feel alive.
