I arrived in North Carolina in 2016 after a career teaching high school artists. We bought land that neighbored our daughter and her young family, and built a house with views of the field and woods that separate our homes. A path mowed through the field allows the kids to go back and forth. As soon as we completed building, I turned my attention to painting the view.
I’m inspired every day by the effect of the changes of the season, weather, time of day, and the view of a swath of the sky. Each painting depicts a singular moment in the life of the field; in these moments, the color and light on the field and trees will never be repeated in just the same way. The scene is always changing and compelling and for now I can’t get enough of it. I work from the photographs I take, and title the paintings with the date and time of that moment, to give the viewer context. I’d like viewers to see the special qualities of this piece of land, and perhaps appreciate the spectacular in the ordinary.
The paintings are either acrylic or oil, on stretched canvas. Visit my website to see my latest work.
