"Functional tableware is the main focus of my work. All work is safe for food. Most pieces begin on the potters wheel. The surface texture is then achieved with various carving tools and slip trailing before the bisque firing. Once the glaze is applied and decoration is complete, the ware is fired a second time in the gas kiln. Gas firings give a softer, more natural appearance to my glazes. Porcelain is my first choice for clay. It has a silky touch while being worked and can be finished to the softest, smoothest surface. The whiteness of the clay body allows the glaze colors to shine. At the highest fire, porcelain makes the strongest clay ware. My work is influenced by patterns in nature, human movement, and especially by living in North Carolina, a state so rich in pottery history."
