Artist Bio

Peg Bachenheimer uses rich color, texture and many layers of paint to express her experience of the timeless beauty in the world. Her abstract paintings use landscape based imagery and she paints with both oil and hot beeswax encaustic. In both mediums, her process involves building up layers of paint and scraping back into them to reveal and obscure. In the 70’s, Peg wove tapestries and her weaving experience shows in the horizontal and vertical lines that appear so often in her work. Peg's work is inspired by nature, her yoga practice, people, travel and by looking closely at the work of other painters.

The following quotes about painting are among her favorites: “What we want to do is to make something that utterly fills the sight.”

-Sam Francis

“The painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through”

-Jackson Pollock

Peg’s oil paintings are constructed from textured acrylic underpainting with many layers of oil paint on top using both brush and palette knife, building up and scraping back. She often uses cold wax as a medium to thicken the paint and to achieve a matte finish.

Peg has been exploring the possibilities of hot wax since 2006. Often she starts with watercolor washes and then layers papers, photos printed on silk, oil stick and organic material into the encaustic medium. Scraping back into the wax allows her to reveal past layers and fusing with a torch allows colors to merge and each layer to become part of the last.

Peg graduated from Smith College with a degree in English and Bank Street College of Education with a Masters in Elementary Education. She taught young children in public schools for over 35 years. Peg has been painting since 1998, when she began classes at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro and Penland School of Craft in the NC mountains. She now paints full time in her studio at her home in Carrboro, NC. Peg’s paintings have been collected by individuals both nationally and internationally. She has had numerous solo and group shows. Peg lives with her husband, Steve, and has 4 grown children and step-children.
