I was drawn to book arts while studying to be a graphic designer. I took a week-long class one summer and fell in love with the tactile nature of the craft and the way it encouraged individual flair and style while still requiring precision. I started making books, then boxes and came to appreciate the seemingly endless forms these could take. I've been at this for more than thirty years and am still discovering new techniques. I strive for my pieces to be fun, useful, and beautiful all at once. Some boxes hold books, some hold jewelry or treasures, and some become sculptural pieces one could hang on a wall. Color and texture are very important to my work, and I use features such as drawers, windows, and compartments to add intrigue. Anything from Japanese papers to natural objects from my own backyard might be incorporated. Each work dictates its own materials and every box I make is unique. Even when I try to reproduce one exactly, it always ends up having some distinction!
Biography
Becky Broun is a native of Chapel Hill. She has been making books and boxes for over 30 years. She received a BA from Connecticut College and a MFA in Graphic Design from Yale School of Art. She has studied box-making and book arts at Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont, The Center for Book Arts in New York, and other workshops.
